February Health Tip from Dr.
Llorens
As winter rolls in the days start getting shorter. Many people suffer from a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD during this time of year. As many as 10 percent of the US population may be affected by this condition or have mild symptoms. While Seasonal Affective Disorder is considered a form of depression the symptoms are slightly different.
The symptoms of SAD include:
- Excessive sleepiness or difficulty staying awake
- Increased appetite, weight gain, and over-eating
- Extreme fatigue with heavy feeling arms and legs
- Irritability and relationship difficulties
- Symptoms completely resolve in spring and summer
Both light therapy and the use of medications called SSRI's are useful for treatment. Light therapy may be appropriate if symptoms are not severe.
Light therapy should be started with a 10,000 lux light box. These are generally available for $200-$500. Treatment should start with 10-15 minute daily sessions and increase to 30 minutes daily for the entire winter. Sometimes results are seen within 2-4 days but for others it may take up to 4 weeks. Commercial devices are recommended rather than a home product.
If you think you may have SAD please consult your physician before starting any treatment.
