May Health Tip by Dr. LLorens
Now that the weather’s getting warmer it’s a great time to think about exercise. Exercise is important for everyone. You’re never too old to start exercising.
Physical benefits of exercise:
- Increased strength and flexibility
- Improved balance
- Decreased pain and joint stiffness
- Increased bone strength
- Weight loss
Emotional benefits of exercise:
-
Relieves symptoms of depression
- May help prevent memory loss
There are different kinds of exercise. Some exercises are targeted at increasing endurance, while others improve strength and flexibility. It’s important to pick an exercise that you enjoy and that fit’s into your day.
I recommend walking to all of my patients. It doesn’t cost anything and almost everyone can do it. Start out by walking 10 minutes every day. Gradually increase your walk to 30 minutes daily. If you don’t feel comfortable walking in your neighborhood, the local mall is a good alternative. Try to walk with a group of friends. The support you give each other is a great motivator.
Twice a week try to add in some strengthening exercises. Light hand weights are available at most department stores. You can also use a can of food held in each hand for additional weight.
Think of ways that you can increase your physical activity during your daily routines. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park a little farther away so that you can walk a greater distance. Use house cleaning as a way to get in some stretching. Be creative!
If you’re ready to increase your exercise there are often health clubs and community groups who can help provide support and training.
If you have chronic health problems like heart or lung disease always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.
